Questions to Ask Your Doctor Before Joining a Clinical Trial

Thinking about joining a clinical trial brings up a lot of questions, and that's a good thing. Asking questions helps you feel confident in your decision, whatever you choose. Here are some to bring to your next appointment.

About the Trial Itself

  • What is this trial testing, and why?

  • What phase is the trial in?

  • How long will the trial last?

  • Could I receive a placebo instead of the actual treatment?

About Your Health and Safety

  • What are the possible risks or side effects?

  • How will my health be monitored during the trial?

  • What happens if I have a bad reaction?

  • Can I keep seeing my regular doctor during the trial?

About Day-to-Day Life

  • How often will I need to go in for visits?

  • Will this affect my current treatment plan?

  • Can I keep working or doing my normal activities?

  • What support is available if I have questions later?

About Costs and Logistics

  • Will my insurance cover any part of this?

  • Are there costs I should expect to pay?

  • Is travel or lodging assistance available?

About Stopping the Trial

  • Can I leave the trial at any time?

  • What happens to my care if I decide to stop?

You do not need to have all the answers right away. A good care team will welcome your questions and take the time to walk through them with you.
